Underage Student Registration
There are many opportunities for students under the age of 18 to register at Madison College. The general guidelines are listed below, but you can also find specifics on programs for high school students.

High School Graduates
If you have not yet reached your 18th birthday but you have graduated from high school, you may apply to programs and/or register for courses without any permission or documentation.*
Students registering for classes that meet during the normal high school day and term (8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday - Friday, during the student's academic high school calendar)
You can only register for and attend classes if you are approved for one of the programs Madison College offers for high school students:
- Advanced standing: Classes you have already taken may transfer in as college credit.
- Compulsory law: This program is for at-risk high school students only. For more information, please contact Dee Okon at (608) 258-2435.
- Dual credit: Take classes at your high school and have them count for college credit.
- Youth apprenticeship: Enrollment in this program begins by seeking permission from your high school. For more information, call (608) 243-4595.
- Course options: Enrollment in this program begins by seeking permission from your high school.
- You may obtain signed permission submitted to Madison College by your parent(s) and your high school using the Under 18 Registration Form (PDF, 90 KB).
Students at least 16 and registering for classes that meet outside the normal high school day/term (After 3 p.m. Monday - Friday, Saturdays or summer sessions)**
You can register for any classes for which you have met the prerequisites (except Adult Basic Education or GED/HSED preparation courses).* No Underage Registration Form is needed.Course Options

Students registering for classes that meet outside the normal high school day/term (After 3 p.m. Monday - Friday, Saturdays or summer sessions)**
You can be registered for class only with signed permission by your parent/guardian using the Under 16 Registration Form (PDF, 55 KB). Madison College must approve the attendance of an underage student.*
Students registering for classes that meet during the normal high school day and term (8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday - Friday, during the student's academic high school calendar)**
These students are not allowed to enroll due to the Compulsory School Attendance Law established under statutes 119.18 (7) and 120.12 (15).
NOTE: Non-students under the age of 16 years who are not enrolled shall not be left unattended in college facilities and must have proper supervision by a parent or guardian.
Course Options allows high school students enrolled in a public school district to take up to two courses at Madison College. It is a free program, but these requirements must be met:
- Your desired course must be open.
- You must meet all course requirements.
- Your high school must approve course selection.
- Your parent/guardian must grant permission.
More information about the overall program can be found at the DPI Course Options website. Our process is outlined below.
Six weeks prior to class start date: You and your parent/guardian must complete, sign, and submit the Course Options application (PI-8900) to Madison College. We will send a copy to your high school. We suggest you work with your counselor and have them submit the application and all materials for you.
You do NOT need to complete our college application; only the PI-8900.
Five weeks prior to class start date: Verify that your high school has sent your official transcript and any Individualized Education Program records to us.
Four weeks prior to class start date: Create a Madison College student account.
Verify that you meet all course requirements. You may require additional documents to be sent in. You can find the requirements by selecting a class here.
You may find some classes are reserved for students formally admitted to a program. You cannot enroll in these classes. Click the + next to the class number for reserved class information.
Three weeks prior to class start date: This is when we begin processing Course Options applications. You will not hear anything from us prior to this time. We appreciate your patience.
Two weeks prior to class start date: You and your high school receive approval or denial letters.
If you received an approval letter from us, your high school must send confirmation of approval to you and to us. Once you have received final approval from both schools, you may register for your class(es) either online or by contacting the Enrollment Center.
If you will request accommodations from us, you will submit an accommodation form to Disability Resource Services.
One week prior to class start date: Your parent/guardian submits the final verification indicating whether you will or will not attend.
You should contact your high school to determine how you will get your textbooks. Some schools have the correct books, but some will arrange to have them charged through our bookstore.
After class starts: Your high school will be billed for course fees after the class has started.
After class ends: You must provide your final grade to your high school. You may view your grades as well as your unofficial transcript in your Student Center.
*Madison College reserves the right to deny enrollment in a class due to safety and/or educational concerns. Certain conditions may require instructor consent.
**Online courses are considered to be held outside of the normal high school day/term, except in cases where there is a mandatory class meeting scheduled during the normal school day.
