- Thursday, February 6: Dr. Mark Hanson, Director of Sustainable Services at Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, Inc. of Appleton, WI will describe solar schools at or approaching zero energy that are being built at construction costs equal to or below regional cost average. The presentation provides examples of school solar financial analysis and implementation that must become routine if we are to battle climate change. Watch video.
- Tuesday, March 10: International Perspectives on Encouraging Women in STEM. A panel discussion with Open World delegates from Russia and faculty members from Madison College. Each panelist will share their efforts to encourage women to pursue STEM careers. Room D1630, 3 – 4 p.m.

The STEM Academy is a dual enrollment program for high school students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Math (STEM). Students take a full-time schedule of college classes at Madison College over 11th and 12th grade. Dual enrollment allows students to earn both college and high school credits. Students attend Madison College full time during the day and participate in home high schools extra-curricular activities and events after the school day ends.
Participating school districts pay the cost of students to attend the STEM Academy. Students can earn up to 60 college credits at no cost to themselves or their families. Currently, Madison Metropolitan School District, Sun Prairie Area School District, Lodi School District, and Poynette School District are the only participating high schools.
Students focus on college classwork in their STEM interests and earn a large number of college credits that apply to four-year colleges and universities. Some students will earn up to 60 credits for the Associate of Science degree. This allows them to start at a four-year college with enough transfer credits for junior standing. Other students may complete up to the first year of an applied associate degree in an applied STEM field, which can be completed in one more year at Madison College after high school.
How to Apply
Tenth grade students from participating school districts who meet the entrance criteria can apply. Applicants must have at least a 2.25 cumulative GPA, 90% attendance rate, and minimum progress toward high school graduation requirements in English, math, science, social studies, physical education, and health classes. Current participating districts have a limited number of available positions, so application to the program does not guarantee admission.
Interested students or families from Madison Metropolitan School District or Sun Prairie Area School District should contact their high schools for more information about the application process and timeline. Other interested families can urge their districts to consider a partnership with Madison College to provide this opportunity to their district’s students.Support

Trips are being planned to the Promega headquarters in Fitchburg, a local Bolt Company construction site, and other STEM employers. Details and registration information will be posted as soon as available.

STEM Scholars Program
The STEM Center supports the need to increase the number of underrepresented minority students who have a career interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) by hosting the STEM Scholars program. This is a faculty mentoring program that provides peer support to scholars.
This program establishes and nurtures a learning community for students who share a common interest in pursuing careers in STEM. Participants in the program receive guidance, support and training to allow them to navigate the college system successfully and encourage their progress towards a career in STEM.

All students in the STEM Scholars program are eligible for a stipend or hourly wage thanks to two National Science Foundation (NSF) grants. Scholars funded through the WiscAMP Scholars Transfer Preparation program grant are referred to as WiscAMP Scholars. Scholars funded through the LSAMP Inspire Scholars grant are referred to as LSAMP Scholars as well as peer leaders, peer tutors and peer guides (not currently recruiting for peer opportunities).
WiscAMP Scholars are students who have completed at least two semesters at Madison College and have completed College Algebra or higher math course with B or better. Eligible applicants should have completed at least 6 credits of transferable STEM coursework and be planning to transfer in Fall 2021. WiscAMP Scholars will receive a stipend of ~$1,900/sem. for successful completion of the program. Students who already have a bachelor’s degree in any subject are ineligible.
