Madison Area Technical College is partnered with BetterMynd to offer our students access to private online therapy sessions from their diverse network of licensed mental health counselors.

These 50-minute, live video-sessions are private, confidential, and can take place from the convenience of your laptop, smartphone, or tablet. Sessions are available during the day, at night, and on the weekends. BetterMynd also provides free self-help resources and free group workshops to all of MATC’s students.

  • What is BetterMynd?

    BetterMynd is an online counseling platform, specifically for college students.  BetterMynd gives you access to virtual counseling from the privacy and convenience of your laptop or smartphone, with appointments available during days, nights, and weekends. You can choose from a network of counselors with diverse specialties and backgrounds. BetterMynd also provides self-help resources and group workshops. 

  • Should I visit a Counselor from Madison College or from BetterMynd?

    That depends on your preferences. Both services are confidential and staffed with experienced counselors who offer short-term counseling focused on solutions to your concerns. Here are some additional facts to help you choose.

    Madison College counseling sessions are:

    • free
    • available during business hours
    • offered in person or virtually
    • provided by a diverse group of 7 counselors


    BetterMynd Counseling sessions are:

    • free for the first 6 sessions
    • available daytime, nights and weekends
    • offered virtually only 
    • provided by a large number of counselors with diverse backgrounds 
  • Who can access BetterMynd?

    You can create an account with BetterMynd if you:

    • are a current Madison College student enrolled in degree credit courses, including academic support classes offered by the School of Academic Advancement
    • are at least 18 years of age
    • have a madisoncollege.edu email address
  • How many times can I meet with a BetterMynd counselor?

    If you meet the criteria above, you can meet a BetterMynd therapist 6 times at no cost. You also receive 3 free workshops. After those 6 sessions, you can

    • use your own health insurance or self-pay $85 per session to continue with your BetterMynd Counselor
    • switch to meeting with a Madison College Counselor at no cost
    • explore low-cost providers in the community (Madison College Counselors can help with this.)


    You can also request additional sessions by contacting the Dean of Students Office at deanofstudents@madisoncollege.edu or 608.243.4555. Additional sessions may be granted on a case by case basis.

  • Is there a cost?

    If you meet the criteria above, you can access BetterMynd services at no cost. 

    If you are not eligible for free sessions, you can schedule with a BetterMynd counselor for $85 per session or schedule with a Madison College Counselor for free. 

  • Can I call BetterMynd in a crisis?

    BetterMynd is not a crisis service. Students in crisis should call our Counseling & College Success office at 608.246.6076 during regular business hours (Monday – Friday, 8am – 4:30pm).

    After hours, students are encouraged to call the Journey Crisis Line at 608.280.2600 or Madison College Public Safety 608.245.2222.

  • What happens to my Better Mynd access if I withdraw or graduate?

    Within 6 months of withdrawal or graduation, student’s free sessions will disappear.

  • What if I don’t like my BetterMynd counselor?

    For counseling to be successful, it’s important students find a therapist who is a good fit. If you don’t connect well with your BetterMynd counselor, you can schedule an appointment with a different therapist. BetterMynd allows you to browse through counselor’s profiles so you can see what they specialize in and when they are available.
